Paediatric Emergency Development Program (PEDP)

The PEDP is a  program offered through the Emergency Department.  It is designed to support the registered nurse in advancing their practice in the field of paediatric emergency nursing. The structured program encompasses the development and advancement of skills which are fundamental to the paediatric emergency nurse. Throughout the program specialist clinical educators and preceptors provide staff with clinical, educational and professional support.

The program is available for all new staff commencing employment in the emergency department. 

 Course content is delivered via  self directed learning packages.  Students will have 2 supernumery days with a clinical nurse facilitator/educator in the resuscitation area, in addition to supernumery days at the commencement of your employment. 

It is expected that students will complete self-directed learning requirements and submit them prior to clinical skills workshops.  Competence in each area must be demonstrated in order for the student to progress in the program. Students will have access to members of the ED nursing education team throughout the program if they need assistance at anytime with course content.  

 Postgraduate diploma in Nursing Practice - Emergency Streams

The Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Practice Critical Care - Emergency stream is offered in collaboration with the St Vincents Hospital Emergency Department and the University of Melbourne.  Students rotate through both Emergency Departments on a month to month basis, developing sound adult and paediatric emergency assessment and clinical skills.  The course is well supported through both hospitals providing students with experience through all areas of the department. Written applications need to be submitted through the Melbourne University website and the nursing education team.

APLS

The Advanced Paediatric Life Support course is recognized as the gold standard in paediatric emergency training. The APLS learning environment is interactive, practical and covers all aspects of the emergency management of children, taught by paediatric specialists. Lectures are supported by emergency scenarios, practical settings, videos and skills workshops in small group sessions. A comprehensive course manual is also provided to all candidates for pre and post course reference.  This course is open to medical, nursing and paramedical staff.

Course fees are dependent on available funding.
